A New Ocean State After Nuclear War

چکیده
Nuclear war would produce dire global consequences for humans and our environment. We simulated climate impacts of US-Russia India-Pakistan nuclear wars in an Earth System Model, here, we report on the ocean impacts. Like volcanic eruptions large forest fires, firestorms from transport light-blocking aerosols to stratosphere, resulting cooling. The responds over two timescales: a rapid cooling event long recovery, indicating hysteresis response Surface drives sea ice expansion, enhanced meridional overturning, intensified vertical mixing that is expanded, deeper, longer lasting. Phytoplankton production community structure are highly modified by perturbations light, temperature, nutrients, initial decimation production, especially at high latitudes. A new physical biogeochemical state results, characterized shallower pycnoclines, thermoclines, nutriclines, ventilated deep water masses, thicker Arctic ice. Persistent changes nutrient limitation drive shift phytoplankton structure, increased diatom populations, which turn increase iron scavenging limitation, In largest scenario (150 Tg), recovery likely order decades surface hundreds years depth, while sea-ice will last thousands years, effectively “Nuclear Little Ice Age.” Marine ecosystems be disrupted both perturbation state, long-term, ecosystem services such as fisheries.

Decadal reduction of Chinese agriculture after a regional nuclear war
A regional nuclear war between India and Pakistan could decrease global surface temperature by 1∘C–2∘C for 5–10 years and have major impacts on precipitation and solar radiation reaching Earth’s surface. Using a crop simulation model forced by three global climate model simulations, we investigate the impacts on agricultural production in China, the largest grain producer in the world. In the f...

BACKGROUND In the 1980s, many medical organizations identified the prevention of nuclear war as one of the medical profession's most important goals. An assessment of the current danger is warranted given the radically changed context of the post-Cold War era. METHODS We reviewed the recent literature on the status of nuclear arsenals and the risk of nuclear war. We then estimated the likely ...
